With plans for Cork Fashion Week 2011 being launched soon, we are giving one final call for any fashion design students, graduates or anyone doing part-time design courses to contact us to submit a collection
Now heading into it’s 3rd year, Cork Fashion Week was established by Lockdown Directors Emer O’Sullivan & Vivienne Kelly to primarily provide a strong local & national platform for homegrown design talent in Cork. Our talented design graduates generally leave our shores for foreign prospects so it is great to set them up here with a good foundation and build a profile and customer base for them if and before they leave in Ireland. Previous winners of the CFW Designer of the Year are Aidan Sheehan, now living out his dream & designing & working in fashion in London and last years winner Belinda Sullivan has now started her own label, is inundated with commissions from customers and has become a household name in Cork for her design talents.
Email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org to enter your collection and join the Cork Fashion Week 2011 Design Team. Join us this year as we showcase the best local design talent and open doors helping student designers get off the ground.
Stay tuned to www.corkfashionweek.com next week for the new site launch & full details of CFW 2011. Join ‘Cork Fashion Week’ on Facebook now for regular news, updates & to apply.

Lockdown success story: Our pageant queen turned runway queen – Mairead O’Farrell breaks the mould and lands editorial shoots, high end clients and national campaigns in 2010.
We are still on a high from being shortlisted for Faye Dinsmore’s ‘Most Influential Agency in Ireland in 2010′ category of the Irish Fashion Awards and we can’t find the words to thank you all enough for the support for voting for us every day. We are genuinely blown away – come on the Rebel County!
Mairead has, in one year, gone from camogie playing (Sars) school girl to the most hard-working, photographed model in Cork and has broken the mould of pageant models only being good at commercial work, by attracting high end bookings & campaigns from Dublin back down to Cork in her first 12months modelling. ”My favourite shows of 2010 with Lockdown were the Opera Lane outdoor shows as we had so much fun doing them with crowds cheering as we modelled in the sunshine. I also loved the opening of the new Douglas Marks & Spencer that I did with Etaoin as we were looked after by the client with the most beautiful clothes & had a great time instore that day. We really get to meet the nicest people through our work at Lockdown” said Mairead.
”The best thing about being with Lockdown is definitely the girls – everybody is genuinely so nice. I love how Emer & Vivienne scout for very diverse looking & different girls. We are all from very different backgrounds but we have all become so close through a strong bond at the agency and are actually very protective of each other. I have made friends for life at Lockdown and hope I continue to be a busy model with the team for years to come”. ”What I look forward to most about 2011 with Lockdown? Definitely Cork Fashion Week next April: the shows, the people, the buzz, the madness backstage, most of all the fun with all the girls! I can’t wait!”
You can keep voting each day for Lockdown (one vote per person allowed per day so keep it going!) at this link: http://blog.fayedinsmore.com/irelands-top-model-agency/
It was with huge excitement today that we learned our little agency with a big heart has been shortlisted in Faye Dinsmore’s Irish Fashion Awards. Thanks to overwhelming public support, Lockdown was the only agency outside of the Dublin agencies to be shortlisted in the ‘Ireland’s Most Influential Model Agency’ category and in only our fourth year of business, we can’t say how grateful & honoured we are! You too can show your support & vote for us here (and enjoy reading Faye’s fab blog too):
Join us over the weekend as we chat to some of our top faces about what they like about being part of the Lockdown family. Today top international model Jennifer Foley talks to us as she packs for her Paris flight next week to visit her French agency, none less than Ford Models, Paris, where she will attend castings and work with Ford. Cork native Jenn is one of our best faces at Lockdown while she is home in Cork studying at UCC and she epitomises all we are about – trying to modernise the concept of Irish models & bring standards of modelling closer to our American & European high end counterparts….a labour of love!
”My fav thing about being with the Lockdown Agency in Cork, is that we all have the best laugh together once we’re off duty, we genuinely are a great bunch of friends at the end of the working day” said the model, who was earmarked as one of the Top Faces to Watch in Fashion 2010 by style bible Vogue.
”One of the most memorable bookings I did in 2010 for Lockdown , apart from Cork Fashion Week shows, had to be posing as a live mannequin in the window of New Look in Opera Lane with former Miss Cork Etaoin ni hAilpin. That was a really fun booking” says Jenn.
Tomorrow we will speak with Etaoin ni hAilpin, Kellie Forde & current Miss Cork Mairead O’Farrell.
Cast a vote for Lockdown on the above link today! Thanks to Faye & all her team at the awards for making our day & all our great friends & clients for voting xxx

It’s a day not to be missed!!
Sick of doom & gloom in the media and on the job front for so many of our peers, we were only delighted to work with one of our favourite clients this month who have injected faith into our industry and much needed jobs into the workforce here. We joined fashion forces with all the Opera Lane retailers from Topshop/Topman & GAP to CC Viyella & Tommy Hilfiger and New Look & Next for free, live outdoor fashion shows for the people of Cork.
Since opening on October 1st 2009, Opera Lane has created over 500 full and part-time jobs in the retail sector. ‘Horrah for good news’ I hear you say? Well that’s not all! In the run up to Christmas trading and with the opening of new sustainable fashion store Kuyichi and other retailers due to open in the coming weeks, that figure is expected to increase to over 650 full and part-time positions.
Spectators enjoyed all the latest collections from the top stores during the three free public shows on Opera Lane and many won fantastic prizes including Kuyichi vouchers, an Apple ipod shuffle courtesy of Compu-B, a beauty hamper from Boots Half Moon St., and hair styling from Origin Hair Salon, Drawbridge St to name but a few.
Lockdown’s Emer O’Sullivan was M.C. for the shows and her co-director Vivienne Kelly managed production throughout the day as flocks of spectators gathered to join the festivities all day. Huge thanks to the team at Boots for the gorgeous makeup on all the models and Fergal, Vicky and their award winning team at Origin Hair Design, Drawbridge Street for the models on-trend hairstyles.
Enjoy our picture diary below from the super day and stay tuned for the video on the event which we will post here at the weekend!

With so much happening with Cork Fashion at the moment kicking off the Autumn/Winter season, we will spend this week uploading pics from some of the stylish events we have had the fortune to be part of here in Cork.

The Warehouse Patrick Street store has been an anchor in the highstreet shopping chain in the city for many years now and we were thrilled to put on our best Warehouse frocks and celebrate the stores re-opening and stylish new look at the re-opening party earlier this month. The party was every bit as stylish as the new-look store with award winning Irish DJ Colm Kennefick entertaining guests. Lockdown’s Laura Keohane, from RTE’s The Model Agent fame was in attendance, as was Lockdown Director Vivienne Kelly & the gorgeous Miss Cork 2010 Mairead O’Farrell.

Lockdown Directors Emer & Vivienne chose Mairead ”as she has been such a hard worker with our agency the past two years. She is a favourite with clients and has progressed to being one of our most requested and booked models at Lockdown. Mairead works very hard as a professional part-time model. She has just finished her Leaving Cert and will attend UCC to begin an Arts degree this Autumn. She stole the show modelling in Cork Fashion Week and we have no doubt that she will steal the show in Dublin at Miss Ireland!” remarked Emer.
Our gorgeous Miss Cork Universe 2010 Maedhbh Kelly will be working closely with Mairead to advise her with helpful tips for the final which takes place on September 18th (the date of Mairead’s 19th birthday) next in the D4 Berkeley Court Hotel, Dublin. The amazing rooftop venue at the Imperial played host to the private party which was rocked into the early hours by the very capable hands of DJ Colin Edwards. One of our top faces, Jennifer Foley has signed with one of the primary model agencies in the World, FORD MODELS, PARIS.
After joining Lockdown when home to study at UCC in Cork, ambitious Jennifer Foley has become one of the most booked faces in modelling here with clients queueing up to have her endorse and represent their brands. Jennifer, who enjoyed huge success in the industry since appearing on RTE’s The Model Agent with Erin O’Connor last year, is over the moon to be taking yet another step up the international modelling ladder. ”I am blessed to be with fantastic Irish agencies, IMG in London and to join the Ford team in Paris is a dream come true, I look forward to working hard while here and furthering my skills in the industry” said the top model.
Jennifer has broken the stereotype in Ireland of Irish models being favoured only for commercial work and scantily clad press shots. She has excelled in the high-end side of the industry, working for some of the top fashion houses in the World and has done the Irish industry extremely proud, paving the way for other models who are working in the same direction.
Huge congrats to Jenn from Vivienne & Emer at Lockdown and all her co-models and associates at the agency!
”Jenn is another great example of a hardworking model who is a shining example to other young models of how working hard, always wanting to learn more and striving to be at the top of your professional game can help you achieve your dreams” said Vivienne Kelly.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Weekend at the Celtic Ross Hotel
In aid of Action Breast Cancer
The annual Girls Just Wanna Have Fun weekend in aid of Action Breast Cancer takes place at the Celtic Ross Hotel in West Cork from 1st – 3rd October 2010. Now in its third year, the weekend in one of the most picturesque settings of West Cork, offers girls of all ages a perfect escape away from everything. A time to chill and relax with lots of fun, relaxation and pampering, and at the same time fundraise for a charity close to many people’s hearts.
Helen Wycherley Owner of the Celtic Ross Hotel explained “The weekend is a great opportunity to have time out with other girls, getting together with sisters, daughters, mothers, mothers in law, best friends, school friends and spending quality fun time together. It’s packed full of activities – to do as much or as little as you like, from dirty dancing demos to relaxing massages, beauty therapies to long walks on the nearby strands.”
One of the highlights of the event will be a cookery demonstration with TV Personality, Martin “Mad About Fish” Shanahan who will be showing the ladies it is all about “no skin, no bone, no problem” when he gives an up close and personal cookery demonstration with complimentary wines, enticing the ladies to eat fish and be healthy.
On the more serious side of things, the weekend, which takes place during Action Breast Cancer Month, raises money for the free services that Action Breast Cancer offer to women with concerns about breast cancer, those who have developed breast cancer and also breast cancer research.
Rose O’Dea, Community Fundraiser Munster with the Irish Cancer Society stated “One in 10 Irish women have a chance of developing breast cancer during their lifetime. The weekend not only raises vital funds so we can maintain the level of service that is vitally needed, but it also raises awareness of breast cancer and other cancers in women.”
Other activities during the weekend include Breast Cancer real life experiences, a self defense lesson with a 4th Degree Taekwondo instructor, Wine Tasting, Style Tips, Salsa dancing, Pilates, Aqua Aerobics and a Mini Facial in the Holistic Suite.
There is also a Glamorous Banquet on the Saturday night with a Champagne Reception and a Best Dressed “Pink” Ladies competition. The Love Junkies will provide the after dinner entertainment to keep the girls dancing until the early hours. And the next day before departing for home, the girls will have time for a brisk walk on The Warren Beach, over the cliff tops to Ownahincha Strand. Guaranteed to banish any cobwebs and set everyone up for the journey home.
The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Weekend in aid of Action Breast Cancer is just €185 per person sharing including two nights B&B, Champagne Banquet on the Saturday night, a Mini Facial or 20 minute Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage in the Holistic Suite and includes all the extra activities during the weekend. When Ruta Jonauskaite approached the Lockdown team two years ago at only 18 years of age, we saw an ambitious spark in her that we knew would made her a valuable, hardworking Lockdown future team member.
In the two years since we met Ruta, she has gone from dedicated schoolgirl to fashion student, fashion designer, beauty pageant finalist and now – a stunning model.
Rutas determination, drive and understanding of professionalism behind the scenes of the Irish fashion industry have earned her a well deserved place on the Lockdown books along side other like models, such as 20 year old fashion design student and top model Kellie Forde. Not interested in being seen out and about like other peers, both girls have spent their time availing of the fashion experience from an unusually young age through the agency by working backstage at shows, helping at launches and events, studying Fashion Design and ultimately working at Cork Fashion Week as well as participating and making the finals of Miss Cork the past two years.
It is with open arms and huge pride that we welcome Ruta in her next step on the fashion ladder as model at the Agency. Ruta is a great role model for younger girls coming up the ranks, proving that hard work really does pay off and we are delighted to have Ruta on board at Lockdown! xoxo
Images below of Ruta’s first shoot with up-and-coming fashion photographer Ivan Begala who also shot Ruta’s runway collection for Cork Fashion Week 2010:
Lockdown have joined forces with Cork’s newest, hippest shopping district, Opera Lane to bring you another design feast. The House of Design will open its doors bi-monthly with the first design boutique happening next Saturday, June 19th.
Fashion designers will be on hand on the day to meet the public and answer any fashion related queries they may have. Orders may be placed for special occasions (weddings, confirmations, functions etc) and there will be full collections of garments and accessories on display.
Top Cork designer Cathy Jackson (pictured above) is very excited about exhibiting at House of Design ‘’I exhibited at Opera Lane as part of Cork Fashion Week 2010 and was hugely encouraged by the knowledge and interest about fashion of the women of Cork who came to shop there. I have been run off my feet designing since and cannot wait to be part of House of Design on June 19th again. It is a huge honour to be involved in something this fashion forward in our city, all of us designers participating are very excited about it’’, remarked Cathy.
A design boutique ran at Opera Lane as part of Cork Fashion Week last April and proved to be an astounding success. Shoppers bagged huge bargains with many handmade garments sold for as little as €25. For this reason, the positive feedback and demand has really proved the need for a designers boutique in our fashion-forward city.
So, ladies, its time to get your shopping on!: Visit House of Design from 9am – 6pm, Saturday June 19th next at Opera Lane (entrance directly across from Topshop).
Miss Cork Maedhbh Kelly joins sports stars to appeal for help in recruiting 500 new child sponsors to help save lives in Swaziland
Miss Cork 2010 Maedhbh Kelly joined GAA legends Jimmy Barry Murphy and Graham Canty, who lined out with former Irish rugby International Michael Bradley today to launch the World Vision ‘Cork 500’, an urgent charity appeal to recruit 500 new child sponsors for an African community in serious need.
The Cork 500 appeal for World Vision (Ireland) is a targeted campaign that hopes to recruit 500 new child sponsors for a long term area development programme in Shiselweni in Swaziland, a community that has been ravaged by drought and the spread of HIV/Aids.
GAA All-Star Jimmy Barry Murphy, pleaded with his fellow Cork people to help World Vision reach its target of 500 child sponsors, “For just 83c a day, you can sponsor a child in Swaziland and make an extraordinary difference to their lives. If Cork hits the target of 500 sponsors, the project in Swaziland will be funded and ultimately lives will be saved – that’s down to us, the people of Cork, to get on board and make that difference.”
It costs €25 a month to sponsor a child, that’s just 83c a day.
To become a sponsor go to worldvision.ie/cork or text SPONSOR to 51500
About World Vision (Ireland)
